About the Region
The Southwestern Region: A Legacy of Leadership and Empowerment
Inspired by the visionary leadership of our founder, Lola Mercedes Parker, the Southwestern Region of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., stands as a beacon of empowerment for business and professional women across the diverse landscapes of the Southwest. Born from a profound understanding of the challenges faced by Black women in the business world, especially during the Great Depression, our purpose, as articulated by Lola Mercedes Parker, is to “encourage young women to enter the Business Field by means of business training.”
Our region’s rich history began with a pivotal moment in 1946, when L. E. Coleman Lockhart, a Charter member of Psi Chapter, was elected and installed as the first Southwestern Regional Director. The following year, in 1947, Psi Chapter, which had been part of the Southern Region, hosted its final Southern Regional Conference in Dallas, TX, from May 3-5, officially becoming the first chapter in the newly formed Southwestern Region. This expansion was a testament to the Sorority’s growth and evolving structure; while the original Constitution provided for four regions: North, South, East and West, today, Iota Phi Lambda proudly comprises five regions: Central, Eastern, Far Western, Southern, and Southwestern. L. E. Coleman Lockhart’s enduring vision also led to the organization of the Mothers and Friendship Auxiliary on February 12, 1945, initially conceived as “helpers and aides of the members.” This auxiliary has evolved through various names, from The Patroness Board to its current designation, The Pelatis Auxiliary.
Today, the Southwestern Region proudly upholds this foundational mission. We unite qualified business and professional women in a vibrant sisterhood, dedicated to promoting increased interest in business education among high school and college young women through impactful programs and scholarships. Our commitment extends to fostering leadership development, establishing and promoting civic and social service activities for both youth and adults, and ultimately, making worthwhile contributions to the ever-evolving socio-economic patterns of our time. We are a dynamic force, propelled by ingenuity and an intentional purpose to build a legacy of excellence and economic empowerment throughout the Southwestern United States.
